Covington takes credit for Edwards’ win over Usman

UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington, who is set to share the octagon in less than a month with current division champion Leon Edwards, credits the Briton with taking the title from Kamaru Usman last August by knocking out the Nigerian with a leg kick to the head.

“My first reaction was shock,” the American told UFC. “I didn’t expect it, but I always understood that this is the kind of sport where one punch can decide everything, and that’s exactly what happened. He was losing the whole fight, but in the last minute he threw a punch and hit exactly the right spot. Usman made a mistake, took his foot off the gas pedal, and he paid for it”

“Without a doubt, I robbed Usman of one of his best qualities. His chin will never be the same again because I made it weak. I punched him in the head, his legs went under and then he faked and asked for a time-out. Leon didn’t do anything special – I did everything before him.”

As a reminder, the welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington will be the main event of UFC 296, which takes place on December 16 in Las Vegas.
