Colby Covington ready to challenge Islam Makhachev in lightweight

Colby Covington, who said a few days earlier that he could knock out Islam Makhachev, believes that his fight with the Russian will become a reality after he takes the UFC welterweight championship belt from Leon Edwards.

What’s more, if the current UFC lightweight champion doesn’t want to move up to his division, he’s ready to move down to his weight class.

“I think the fight with Makhachev is a very real possibility,” Chaos told MMA Fighting in an interview. “We’ve discussed this fight backstage before about whether I can make 155 because I’m not the biggest welterweight. I don’t ride too much – 15-20 pounds (7-9 kg), and that’s if before that I eat everything that is not nailed down. So anything is possible.”

“Therefore, I know that in the off-season we are the same weight as him, but he is just a weight cheater. He runs all that weight to have an advantage over lightweights because there aren’t any wrestlers out there to give him trouble. Of course, he wants to stay in this weight class, in the same division where his dad Khabib ruled. I will stop his fight and punch him in the face until he gives up.”

Before the superfight with Makhachev becomes a reality, Colby Covington must take the championship belt from Leon Edwards, and the Russian fighter must defend his title against the winner of the challenger fight between Charles Oliveira and Benil Dariush. According to rumors, both fights can take place on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.
