Charles Oliveira names opponent after canceling fight with Islam Makhachev

Having withdrawn from his title fight against Islam Makhachev due to a dissection, Charles Oliveira wants Conor McGregor, who plans to return to the octagon next year, as his next opponent.

“I’m a UFC employee and I’ll do what they say, but I’m the number one contender and I’ve beaten everyone below me,” the Brazilian told MMA Fighting. “I’ve been asking for a fight with Conor for a long time. Charles Oliveira versus Conor McGregor is a money fight. It’s a fight that will bring us a lot of money. Conor sells fights, I sell fights. It’s a fight that everybody wants.”

“The only thing we don’t know is whether Conor wants this fight. I’ve said a thousand times I’m ready to fight him at lightweight, welterweight, middleweight – I’ve offered him to pick a weight class. Let him tell me where and I’ll be there. Just send me a contract and I’ll sign it. I’m waiting for the UFC to make a decision. I deserve it.”

According to Islam Makhachev, who agreed to share the octagon with Alex Volkanovski on short notice, Charles Oliveira should confirm his right to a title fight against Justin Gaethje, the UFC’s second-ranked lightweight division, while Conor McGregor is scheduled to face Michael Chandler.

Recall that the title superfight between the Russian and the Australian will be the main event of the tournament UFC 294, which starts in less than a day in Abu Dhabi.
