Former Bellator champion and former UFC lightweight title challenger Michael Chandler has explained how Alexander Volkanovski can beat Islam Makhachev in the upcoming super fight.
“I’m a big fan of Volkanovski,” said the American in an interview with MMA Junkie. “He is very, very good. Will it be less than Islam? Yes, and significantly. But I think Volkanovski will perform better than everyone expects. He used to weigh 210-220 pounds (95-100 kg) when he played rugby. Your body remembers these things and that power stays with you. Strong hips are a guarantee that Islam will have a hard time translating it.”
“The only thing is that Volkanovski is shorter, and if Islam gets under him, puts his head under his chin, leverage will play the role, and he can get him off the ground quite easily. Otherwise, Volkanovski is better than him. He surpasses Islam in impact, speed and power. If Islam can’t move him in the first minute of every round and hold him, I think Alex can win by decision. Most likely, this will not be an early ending, but a decision.”
Recall that the superfight between Makhachev and Volkanovski, in which the Russian fighter will defend the UFC lightweight title, will be the main event of the UFC 284 tournament, which will be held on February 12 in Perth, Australia.
