Bellator 289 results: Magomedov fell asleep in the Grand Prix semifinals

Russian fighter Magomed Magomedov failed to reach the final of the Grand Prix of the lightest division of Bellator, having suffered an early defeat in the confrontation with the American Patrick Meeks.

The semi-final bout, which became the third most important event of the Bellator 289 tournament, ended at 2:39 of the second round after Magomedov made an unsuccessful transfer attempt, giving his neck to the guillotine, and Meeks took his chance and finished the reception, putting his opponent to sleep. In the first round, the American fighter stopped the opponent’s passes several times by attempting to hold the guillotine, but the Russian managed to get out of the dangerous situation.

In the second semi-final, interim Bellator bantamweight champion Raufjon Stots successfully defended his title with a five close round split decision win over Danny Sabatello. At the same time, one of the judges gave all the rounds to the challenger, scoring 50-45 in his favor, and two of his colleagues gave the fight to the champion with a score of 48-47 twice.

In the co-main event of the event, reigning Bellator flyweight title holder Liz Carmouche scored a dominant victory over former division champion Juliana Velasquez, finishing the Brazilian with a lever armbar late in the second round.

Seven months earlier, the American took away the championship belt from Velasquez, winning the fight by technical knockout in the fourth round, however, due to a controversial stoppage, an immediate rematch was appointed.
