Hall of Famer and former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten shared his opinion on the upcoming title fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski, in which the Russian will defend the UFC lightweight championship belt, and the Australian will put the title of the best fighter of the organization on the line regardless of weight class.
“Volkanovski is a terminator with endless energy,” Rutten told Submission Radio. “He goes after Makhachev, who has run over everyone in his path, but Volkanovski never ceases to amaze me, and if there is anyone who can handle Makhachev, it is definitely him.”
“Maybe he can even stop Islam because they both lost by knockout once. Alex needs a good hit. An accurate knee strike, when Islam goes for a takedown, can put an end to this fight. And it seems to me that Volkanovski will try to translate Makhachev. Nobody is waiting for this, and precisely because no one is waiting for this, it can work. It’s going to be a tough fight, but I’m betting money on Volkanovski.”
Recall that the title superfight will be the main event of the UFC 284 tournament, which will be held February 11 in Perth, Australia.
