UFC Fight Night: Grasso vs. Araujo took place Oct. 15 at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC flyweight contenders Alexa Grasso (15-3) and Viviane Araujo (11-4) collided in the night’s main event. The fight aired live on ESPN+.

Round 1: Mark Smith gets the fighters going and we’re off. Araujo lands a short jab, but Grasso misses a huge right hook. Both women circling, Grasso lands a straight right hand. They exchange quick words with their competitors, then they return to the middle, where Araujo land a jab and another. Grasso eats a left hook as she’s having a little bit of trouble finding the range, obviously, it’s early in this five rounder.

Araujo’s jab was her most effective weapon in the early stages. Grasso remains patient and still manages to land an outside leg kick. Araujo fires with less than two minutes left. Grasso sprawls and Araujo keeps the momentum on her feet. Araujo responds with a low kick. Final 45 seconds and the strikes landed are near equal. Araujo is given a takedown but Grasso immediately gets back on her feet, and the two clinch against each other. Araujo lands a couple of short punches and that’s the round. Very close.

Round 2: High kick from Grasso sneaks in, Araujo answers with a crisp left hand. Big exchange from both women, Grasso looked to get the better of it. Araujo’s head movements are good enough to keep Grasso from making a wild combo. Araujo hits the ground with a body kick from Grasso. Araujo is unable to reach the counter, and Grasso resets.

Grasso is getting loose and Araujo lands a grab and then goes into side control. Araujo looks to mount. Grasso defends, and then back to side control. Just under two minutes left, Grasso tries to get to the half-guard, while trying to pummel. Araujo wins the positional exchanges with ease, though not much. Grasso gets up again and lands a right hand.

Right hand from Grasso, and she’s starting to gain back some momentum. Jab and leg kick from Grasso, high kick comes up short, combo lands and Araujo drags her down as the horn sounds. Another close round. It could happen either way.

Round 3: Could be even, could be 20-18 Grasso, neither is awful, honestly. Both women land in an early exchange, Araujo lands a combo a few seconds later. Pace has slowed a bit in this third stanza, possibly to conserve energy for the championship rounds, Araujo grazes Grasso with a left, Grasso just misses on her jab attempt, but lands a right hand moments later.

Halfway home in the third, Grasso lands a leg kick that’s very tough to see coming. Araujo attempts to steal a high kick from behind the left hook that Grasso has placed on his body. Inside kick from Grasso lands with 90 seconds to go.

Nice left hand from Araujo leaves Grasso swinging at air. Combo hits the forearm of Grasso, right hand from Grasso, nice jab from Araujo. Another hard right from the underdog and the horn sounds. Very competitive scrap.

Round 4: First time either woman has seen a fourth round in the UFC and they come out swinging. Araujo moves forward, landing an inside leg kick as well as a jab behind the head. Both women win another exchange. Araujo is just a tad slower, but still landing. With just three minutes remaining, Araujo’s right cross finds the mark.

Right handed from Grasso locates the chin. Araujo responds with a combination, Grasso then returns with a right-hand. Both fighters land, Araujo drops a clean right hand after a high kick attempt.

Both land right hands, Grasso got the better of it with 90 seconds to go. Araujo lands a straight right leg kick on Grasso’s target and eats a right to get a takedown. If she can get it, it could be big.

Grasso defending to this point but she’s losing the positional battle against the fence. Grasso attempting to get knees on the body but is able gain separation. Left-hand attempt by Grasso fails and the horn sound.

It may have been even.

Araujo performed quite well.

Round 5: Scorecards could be everywhere, so these final five minutes are gigantic. Grasso lands first, Araujo answers. Although both women appear to have a lot of energy, Araujo answers that the tanks may not be emptying until the end. Grasso loses on a combination. Araujo doesn’t throw all that much, and Grasso pays by using a left-hand from Grasso.

Right hand lands flush from Grasso and Araujo shoots, the battle against the fence is on. Grasso able to stay on her feet and gets separation, landing a leg kick. Araujo is pushing ahead, but not throwing as much power. Grasso seems to be fine with the pace. Leg kick from Vivi and we’re approaching the final 90 seconds.

Grasso lands a right-hand and stuffs Araujo’s takedown attempt. Araujo shoots again, nothing doing. Final 30 seconds and feints all over the place. Araujo goes for one more takedown, while Grasso lands a right hand. The horn sounds and they clinch. Cards will be interesting, but it seems like Grasso will be watching UFC 280 with a much more interested eye.
