The best UFC fighter of any weight class, Alexander Volkanovski, does not think that Jon Jones should remove him from the first line of the UFC P4P rankings, even if the American manages to defeat Cyril Gan this weekend and win the vacant UFC heavyweight title.
“If we look at Jon Jones and his accomplishments, we can see why his name will always be on this list,” MMANews quoted the Australian as saying. “There are all sorts of conversations about this topic, but I am not going to give him the first place in the pound-for-pound rating”
“He has defended the light heavyweight title many times and is now climbing up to face a real contender. If he wins the belt, obviously this topic will be brought up again, but I think that then you need to evaluate the level of competition in the divisions. Here’s what to look for first.”
Alex Volkanovski, who holds the UFC featherweight title, made an unsuccessful attempt last month to take the UFC lightweight championship belt from Islam Makhachev, losing to the Russian by a unanimous decision after five rounds, however, he retained the first line in the ranking of the organization’s best fighters regardless of weight.
As for the fight between Jon Jones and Cyril Gun, he will headline UFC 285, which will take place on March 4 in Las Vegas.
