Israel Adesanya has tentatively agreed to fight Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 300 in Las Vegas even before the South African defeated Sean Strickland to take the UFC middleweight championship belt from the American.
Du Plessis’ manager, Daniel Rubinstein, revealed this in an interview with Jon Enik.
“Honestly, he wouldn’t have called Izzy out if Izzy wasn’t ready,” Rubinstein said on the John Enik and Kenny Florian podcast. “So I called Izzy’s manager and asked if he would be ready to fight at UFC 300 if Dricus challenged him, because I didn’t want the guy barking up the wrong tree, and I got an affirmative answer.”
The new UFC middleweight champion, who triumphantly returned home the day before, confirmed that he plans to attend the anniversary event.
“There’s nothing definite yet, but that’s what we want to do,” Du Plessis said at a press conference upon his return to South Africa. “UFC 300 is a big opportunity if my body will allow me to do it. Obviously, I’ve had some damage and some minor injuries.”
“I don’t know exactly how significant those injuries are yet. I’ll go through a full examination, including a concussion, to make sure there’s nothing serious. Then UFC 300 is a very big opportunity.”
A day earlier, UFC head Dana White told fans that the main event of UFC 300 had not yet been decided, but promised that the fight would not disappoint them and would live up to the status of the event.
Recall that the anniversary event will be held on April 13 in Las Vegas.
