A fight for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title has been scheduled

A women’s title fight for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title belt between Raquel Pennington and Mayra Bueno Silva will be part of UFC 297, which takes place Jan. 20 in Toronto, Canada.

Informed sources close to the situation have reported the bout.

Raquel Pennington, 35, picked up her fifth straight victory in January with a split decision win over Katelyn Vieira. The American made a failed attempt to take the UFC flyweight title from Amanda Nunes in 2018, losing to the Brazilian by technical knockout in the fifth round.

Mayra Bueno Silva, 32, finished Holly Holm by second-round choke in July this year, but then failed a banned substance test and forfeited the win as the fight was ruled a no contest. However, the Brazilian was able to prove that the banned ritalinic acid had gotten into her system along with the ADHD medication she was taking and only received a four and a half month suspension. Prior to her bout with “The Preacher’s Daughter,” Mayra Bueno Silva had won three straight, including submisons finishes of Stephanie Egger and Lina Lansberg.

As a reminder, the UFC women’s flyweight championship belt became vacant with the retirement of Amanda Nunes, and Raquel Pennington and Mayra Bueno Silva are currently ranked second and third in the division’s rankings, respectively. Why former UFC champion Julianna Pena, who tops the rankings, is not fighting for the title is not reported.
