The new UFC middleweight champion, Dricus Du Plessis, who took the title from Sean Strickland, doesn’t take Hamzat Chimaev seriously after he challenged him.
“Yeah, but he said that to Jon Jones, too,” the South African said at a press conference following UFC 297 in Toronto, commenting on the Chechen fighter’s statement. “Does anybody else take this guy seriously? If there are opponents that make sense, I don’t want to fight opponents that don’t make sense.”
“Fighting Israel Adesanya makes sense, fighting guys that deserve a title shot makes sense. I don’t want to be Yisrael Adesanya fighting Sean Strickland. Yes, Strickland won that fight, but I don’t think they should have fought at all.”
Despite suffering a significant loss in the title fight, Du Plessis is ready to compete in less than three months at the UFC 300 anniversary event on April 13 in Las Vegas.
“Remember how handsome I was before the fight? Now I look like a cauliflower. Yeah, I’m pretty beat up right now, and I wouldn’t want to set a deadline, but UFC 300 sounds awesome.”
The title fight headlining the numbered Canadian event went all five rounds and ended with the South African middleweight winning by split decision.
