Despite the lifting of the ban on displaying national symbols in the UFC, the flag of one country is still not allowed in the octagon.
And it’s not the flag of the Russian Federation.
According to British fighter Farid Basharat, who is of Afghan descent, he will not be able to go out fighting with the Afghan flag in a week.
“I’d like to come out with a flag, but they won’t allow the Afghanistan flag,” Basharat told MMA Fighting. “Not the Afghan flag. My brother Javid tried to do it, but they said no because they don’t recognize the current national flag and the old one is not official. That’s why the Afghan flag is still under the ban.”
Farid Basharat, 26, will return to the octagon on Jan. 13 at UFC Fight Night 234 in Las Vegas, and his opponent will be 31-year-old Frenchman Taylor Lapilus.
Recall that the world’s strongest league introduced a ban on displaying flags with the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, but last October the head of the UFC, Dana White, publicly announced its repeal.
