Former UFC two-weight champion Conor McGregor shared his opinion on the main event bouts of UFC 294, which took place this past weekend in Abu Dhabi.
According to the Irishman, referee Mark Goddard, who officiated the lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski, had every reason to stop the fight and give a warning to the Russian, instead of recording a knockout loss for the Australian.
“Tough sport to referee,” McGregor wrote on social media. “To stop a fight and issue a warning or take points off when Wolf was already effectively unconscious is a difficult task. But the reasoning was there, one hundred percent. I would have liked to have seen it happen. The punches to the back of the head looked bad.”
The former UFC champion was pleased with the performance of Hamzat Chimaev, who defeated Kamara Usman by majority decision in the second most important event of the event to become the next challenger for the UFC middleweight title.
“Respect. Everything is fair game. Title shot is next. Strickland vs. Chimaev is going to be crazy. Congrats on the brown belt. Your buddy, black belt,” the Irish fighter wrote.
