Coach Volkanovski: “Sambo is a myth, it doesn’t exist”

Titled Australian jitser Craig Jones, who is Alexander Volkanovski’s grappling coach, doesn’t think that in the rematch against Islam Makhachev his mentee should be seriously afraid of the Russian’s sambo moves.

In the opinion of the Australian specialist, this type of martial arts is not an independent martial art, and its effectiveness in MMA is highly questionable.

“We’ve heard about sambo, but we’ve never seen it work,” Jones told Submission Radio. “If Islam is doing a sub-match, it’s a jiu-jitsu technique. If he does a teikdown, it’s a translation from judo. To me, sambo is a myth, it doesn’t exist.”

Recall that earlier this week, Alexander Volkanovski agreed to replace the dissected Charles Oliveira in a title fight with Islam Makhachev, which will headline UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on October 21.

In February of this year, the Australian, who holds the UFC featherweight title, already tried to take the lightweight championship belt away from the Russian, losing by unanimous decision.
