Paulo Costa underwent surgery five weeks before his fight with Khamzat Chimaev

Five weeks before his fight with Khamzat Chimaev, former UFC middleweight championship belt challenger Paulo Costa underwent surgery on his right elbow.

The Brazilian posted a series of relevant photos and videos on social media, but assured fans that he had already returned to training and that his fight with “Borz” was still on the table.

“How strong are you? You never know until life tests you with fire,” Costa wrote. “Three weeks ago I had surgery, ten stitches. But I know how tough I am and I keep improving and overcoming myself. It won’t stop me – I’m already sparring and training. I feel blessed – God is making me an exceptional environment and surrounding me with great people”

Costa didn’t specify a diagnosis, but judging by the gruesome photos, he had to deal with a staph infection.

As a reminder, the middleweight fight between Paulo Costa and Khamzat Chimaev should be the second main event of UFC 294, which takes place on October 21 in Abu Dhabi.
