If Colby Covington takes the UFC welterweight title away from Leon Edwards, he plans to make the first defense of the championship belt against Islam Makhachev.
“Nobody in the welterweight division deserves it, but there’s this little Mongolian who’s been talking about how he wants to leave the babyface division and fight in the real men’s division,” “Chaos” told James Lynch. “I’m talking about Islam Makhachev.”
“He fights in the underweight division and beats midgets by split decisions. It’s just pathetic. This little Mongolian says he wants to fight in the men’s division and face a real contender, an American champion. It’s a big superfight and I think the fans want to see it.”

For this superfight to become a reality, Colby Covington must defeat Leon Edwards on Dec. 16 at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, and Islam Makhachev must successfully defend his lightweight title in a rematch with Charles Oliveira on Oct. 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.
