Three days after a press conference in Sydney at which UFC president Dana White promised Israel Adesanya an immediate rematch with Sean Strickland, the head of the world’s strongest league said the press misinterpreted his words.
“People have asked me about the rematch and I said it sounds good, but I never said the stupid de*** that those stupid websites wrote,” White said at a press conference in Las Vegas. “I didn’t say – we’re organizing a rematch. I just said it sounds good. Obviously, we have a lot of options and I’m still not against a rematch for Israel, but we’ll see how it plays out.”
That said, the UFC executive remains convinced that it was not the stunning performance of Sean Strickland that decided the outcome of the title fight, but rather the better condition of Israel Adesanya.
“Look, Izzy didn’t look good on the night. He was slow and lethargic, and a lot of people agree with that. Strickland felt it, realized it, seized the moment and won the title. When you have a dominant champion like Israel and he suddenly loses like that, it’s okay to say – yeah, he didn’t look good tonight”
Recall that the middleweight title fight, which headlined last weekend’s UFC 293 event in Sydney, went the full distance and ended with the American winning by unanimous 49-46 three-round unanimous decision, with the challenger sending the champion to a knockdown as early as the first round.
