Reigning UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is convinced that South African middleweight Drikus Du Plessis has no chance of winning in a challenger showdown with his compatriot Robert Whittaker.
“Listen, Izzy wants new blood, it’s obvious,” the Australian said in another video posted on his YouTube channel. “He definitely wants to see Drikus win, to fight him, to see someone new in front of him.”
“There would be a lot of hype if he could beat Robert Whittaker, but it won’t be easy to do so. Drykus can be a great fighter, but Robert is too versatile, good in all aspects, and his skill set is too extensive.
“You are insane if you think Du Plessis can beat Whittaker. I can’t imagine Robert losing this fight. No one can stop him but Izzy. No one but Izzy could even come close to it. It shows how good Robert Whittaker is.”
Recall that the unification fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez on July 8 will headline the UFC 290 tournament in Las Vegas, and the middleweight contender fight between Robert Whittaker and Dricus Du Plessis will be the third most important event of the numbered event.
