UFC bantamweight title contender Sean O’Malley shared his opinion on the title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo, in which the reigning champion won a split decision after five rounds.
“By my reckoning, Henry was leading 3-1 going into the final round and to be honest, I was really surprised that Aljo won,” O’Malley told a post-UFC 288 press conference. “Henry did his job, but we’re in New Jersey, and this is Aljo’s territory.”
“I really wanted to fight Henry, I dreamed of putting this dude to bed, but apparently it was not destiny. However, I think he won and looked good in this fight. He was in shape and ready to fight. I consider him a winner.”
“Stylistically, Henry would have been a more comfortable match for me, but I really wanted to slap this little dude. For me it was a double motive, but what happened happened.”
O’Malley also commented on reports that his fight against Sterling could take place on August 19 at UFC 292 in Boston.
“This is news to me. I don’t want to go to Boston. Dana, I’ve been trying for god knows how long to get a fight in the T-Mobile arena. I want to fight in Vegas. I want to fight in Vegas where it’s warm and dry and you can have a pool party. Boston, that’s cool, but I want to go back to the west coast.”
