A featherweight unification bout between reigning UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski and interim title holder Yair Rodriguez is in development and could be part of UFC 290 on July 8 in Las Vegas.
This was reported by Fox Sports Australia, citing informed sources close to the situation.
On February 11 at UFC 284 in Perth, Alex Volkanovski made an unsuccessful attempt to take away the UFC lightweight title from Islam Makhachev, losing to the Russian by unanimous decision, and Yair Rodriguez in the second most important event of the event finished with a triangle choke of American Josh Emmett and won the interim UFC championship belt in featherweight category.
Despite Volkanovski’s desire for an immediate rematch with Makhachev, UFC president Dana White has said the Australian will only get another lightweight title shot after defending his championship belt against the Mexican.
