Reigning UFC featherweight champion and UFC lightweight title contender Alexander Volkanovski commented on the battle of views with Islam Makhachev at the final pre-match press conference.
“I’ve seen in previous interviews how confident and cocky he is, but I knew that would change,” the Australian told Submission Radio. “Now he’s cutting weight and looking weak and insecure. I was expecting it so I just asked, ‘Are you ready?’ and he said, ‘Yes, of course'”
“He looked significantly leaner than even a couple of days ago, and I reminded him that today he was waiting for a killer weight race. He asked me, ‘How are you? Is everything okay?’, and I’m like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m stronger than ever’, and then he decided to touch me”
“I bet he sensed my guns, you know what I mean? And then they gave us belts and he said, ‘You have a fake belt’, like, ‘I’m the champion here, not you,’ and I said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll be a double champion soon.’ In general, it was a friendly exchange of taunts – a picking that is necessary. I liked everything – the energy and the audience were amazing”
The title superfight in lightweight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski on the night from Saturday to Sunday will head the UFC 284 tournament in Perth, Australia, and will determine the best fighter of the organization, regardless of the weight category.
