Tomorrow in Manchester (UK) in the middleweight limit there will be an intriguing duel of local popular fighters: former world champion in the lower division Liam Smith (32-3-1, 19 KOs) is approaching the fight against ex-challenger Chris Eubank Jr (32-2 , 23 KOs) as an underdog. But that doesn’t really bother him.
The fighters “slightly” went too far during yesterday’s press conference. There were also episodes that do not color either one or the other.
For some reason, Smith began to hint at the opponent’s homosexual orientation: “Listen, you are pretending to be a ladies’ man. But I’m just curious. Has anyone ever seen you with a girl? Or are you hiding something from us?
Eubank answered the opponent with the same coin: “So you decided to declare that I am gay? And I was once told that you are constantly cheating on your wife. I think it’s better to be gay than a traitor.”
Unexpectedly, even ex-world champion Tony Bellew got from the favorite – the whole point is that he (like Smith) is a native of Liverpool: “Until today, I thought that the biggest asshole from Liverpool is Bellew. But you, dude, definitely beat him to it. To be honest, I’m still impressed.”
Bellew has already reacted to Eubank’s comment: “He’s right. I’m the #1 asshole from Liverpool. But I’m not just an asshole. I’m an asshole who has achieved far more than he will ever achieve. He would also like to start posing again with that black belt (interim WBA champion) he won at Brighton Pier (a popular gay hangout in Britain).”
The press conference was shown live on Sky Sports channel. The hosts immediately apologized for the homophobic remarks they made.
Eubank vs Smith is one of the main fights of January 2023 in boxing. Favorite coach Roy Jones stated: “I’m preparing Chris for Golovkin and Canelo, not Liam.” And the iconic Froch thinks Eubank can beat Golovkin.
