Former two-weight UFC champion Daniel Cormier has commented on the decision of his friend and teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has minimized his mixed martial arts activities in order to spend more time with his family.
“When Khabib decided to retire from coaching, I thought about it – about the time we spend with the family, and how important it is,” Cormier said in the latest edition of his ESPN analytical program. “Khabib has come to a stage in his life where he doesn’t want to miss important moments. Work takes you away from those important moments, and Khabib is a family guy who doesn’t want to give it up anymore. He wants to spend more time with his kids, his wife and his mom.”
“For me, this is another occasion when Khabib shows why he is so special. With all the attraction of things like money and fame, saying, ‘These big moments mean more to me than money and everything’, it just shows who Khabib is. Khabib’s legacy will be forever. He led his brother Usman to the Bellator belt and he led Islam to the UFC belt.”
According to available information, Khabib Nurmagomedov will not even be present at the duel of Islam Makhachev, who will defend the UFC lightweight championship belt against Alexander Volkanovski on February 11 at UFC 284 in Perth.
