In May 2022, the undisputed super-middleweight champion and the current leader of the P4P rating, Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs), tried to take the WBA Super belt from Russian light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs), but lost by decision of the judges.
In September, Canelo returned to 76.2 kg and closed the trilogy with Gennady Golovkin with a confident victory, after which he spoke about the injury, the solution of which required surgical intervention. The fighter plans to hold one moderately intermediate fight next year (presumably with Briton John Ryder), and then again go against Bivol – a rematch clause would be written in the contract.
Meanwhile, the Russian is not sure that the second fight will take place. Its clearly strains this situation: “To be honest, I don’t care. I don’t want to think about it. And I don’t want to depend on his decisions.”
Previously, Bivol said that he was fed up with Canelo’s constant excuses: “It’s either a category, or a camp, or a hand …” And the Russian also said that on the eve of that fight, “I went through political pressure.” Our colleagues from ESPN have already summed up the results of 2022 in boxing: all the winners.
