As we reported earlier, the former world champion in the super middleweight (up to 76.2 kg) American Caleb Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) is struggling to fight against an unbeaten compatriot, a two-time champion in the same division and the current owner of the “interim” belt from WBC David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs). In order to be in the same ring with him, Caleb has already signed a contract.
It is possible that the boxers will still fight in May 2023. It was assumed that Benavides in January will hold another walk-through fight against Jose Uscategui, but under pressure from a disgruntled public, the mismatch fell through.
Meanwhile, British promoter Eddie Hearn, who works closely with Mexican undisputed 76.2 kg champion Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs), fully admits that Alvarez will subsequently fight the winner of the Benavides-Plant fight.
“Here is a fight that will definitely put Benavidez in a great position to fight Canelo. I know what he is capable of. If Benavidez puts on a great performance and everyone starts demanding it (his fight with Canelo), he (Alvarez) will have no problem fighting Benavidez,” Hearn said.
Previously, Benavidez responded to Canelo: “Who cares? Take it and do it!
