Former unified world heavyweight champion (up to 90.7 kg) and ex-heavyweight division champion (over 90.7 kg) British David Haye on British television
commented the plan for the victory of former British champion Anthony Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) in a possible fight against the WBC title holder Briton Tyson Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs).
On the air of the boxing show, David criticized the favorite of the British public, citing the fight of local slugger Derek Chisora against the WBO mandatory challenger Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) as an example.
– Joshua has decided to fight Usyk, but what will be the plan for defeating Fury?
Tyson Fury has fallen a lot. Often it was a big right overhand. And how many right overhands did Joshua throw against Usyk? To be honest, very few. He tried to keep things neat and clean. So he lost and gave space to the opponent. He did not “inspire” his blows. Looking at how he hit, it looks like someone worked on their paws. It’s like looking into a boxing book about how to box. Hands are here, jab is like this [показывает]. Everything is very neat and clean. He needs to become non-standard, throw away the rule book and do something sensible. But you can prepare for combinations, step in, switch to a southpaw, explode. It can be done.
- The expert analyzed what exactly prevents the Fury-Joshua fight from being made
Let’s go back to what Chisora did when he fought Usyk. I thought he won. He pressured him a lot more than Joshua, although many people assume that Anthony Joshua is much better than Chisora. But Chisora had a lot more success with Usyk than with Anthony in 24 rounds. What Chisora did was not according to the book, it was not beautiful. It was just effective. And sometimes that’s what you have to do against someone who’s as unconventional as Tyson Fury. Don’t play the boxing game with someone who doesn’t play it. Just tear up the script and find a way to get your fists to your head as fast and hard as possible.
“Do you think those scars of the first defeat still exist?” Because his whole style since the Ruiz rematch is the only version of Joshua that we see. We used to see Joshua the Destroyer, and after this fight, we only see this version. Do you think these scars are still present, and how can they be cured?
“I believe you heal those scars by doing live sparring sessions. For example, if you put Tyson Fury on the ropes with your hands down, or put me on the ropes with your hands down, and let someone throw a lot of punches. I’ve been boxing since I was a kid, and so are you, Carl (Frampton). You can put your hands down, and when someone throws a right hand, you can slip, smear. If you can’t avoid a hit, you know how to disarm it.
- Joyce volunteered to come on as a substitute on December 17 – not with Fury, but with Joshua
Anthony Joshua’s style doesn’t allow for that. He doesn’t put himself in the position of being completely exhausted back against the ropes and having to get rid of these problems. My trainer gave me a certain number of punches per round of sparring. I’ve sparred with anyone, world-class heavyweights, and I’ve only been allowed to throw five right hands, or only 5 punches, and they didn’t know it. And I had to be very, very limited. And when combinations were thrown at me, I had to handle them and feel comfortable.
I don’t believe Joshua practices taking punches. I talked to people who sparred with him. He’s just trying to win the round. What, unfortunately, does Joshua have? He has the physical tools to work in any style he wants, but he has chosen a very standard style.
