WBA President Gilberto Mendoza says he would very much like to pair up with the WBC to determine one single mandatory challenger for Mexican undisputed super middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs).
Mendoza proposes to hold a WBC / WBA eliminator between undefeated American David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) and Cuban David Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs), “especially since they are already talking so much about a face-to-face fight.”
Benavidez is a former two-time WBC champion and the current holder of the interim belt under this version, while Morrel holds the WBA World title.
Mendoza believes that “this idea can be realized”, but why does he forget that Canelo could theoretically lose all the belts in September – he is waiting for a fight with veteran Kazakh antagonist Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs).
The fight will take place on T-Mobile arena (Las Vegas, USA), where these fighters had previously met twice: in 2017 they tied the fight, and 12 months later the Mexican was a little better.
The problem is that relations between organizations have not been developing recently: the President of the WBC lashed out at the WBA: “The days of respect have sunk into oblivion!” Mauricio Suleiman also believes that Canelo is risking everything. If he loses to Golovkin, he is unlikely to return.
