The Mexican Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) will have a chance to defeat the Russian Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) in a rematch, but only if he decides to “change coaches”, and new mentors, in in turn, make it lighter on the feet.
Such an essentially meaningless consideration was voiced by the former promoter of Canelo, the head of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya.
Recall that on May 8, the absolute champion of the super middleweight division Alvarez tried to take away the WBA Super light heavyweight title (up to 79.4 kg) belonging to Bivol, but failed and was outboxed by unanimous decision following the results of 12 rounds.
Under the contract for the fight, Alvarez has the right to a rematch. However, if he does not change anything, he will fail again, Oscar is sure.
“I think for an opponent like Bivol, who uses his head and his boxing mind, Canelo is too “flat feet”. Because if you look at Canelo’s losses, he only lost to Mayweather and Bivol,” De La Hoya said. He was failing because of his footwork. He was too heavy on his feet, while his opponents, on the contrary, are light.”
“If Canelo changes coaches, he will have a chance to beat Bivol,” Oscar concluded.
Note that Alvarez’s trainer is 2021’s “Best Trainer of the Year” Eddie Reynoso and they’ve been inseparable since Canelo’s early days in boxing.
Meanwhile, British functionary Eddie Hearn said at all that the Alvarez-Bivol revenge might not take place.
