Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn says the next opponent for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) for the September 17 fight will be announced next week. There are only two options: IBF/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs).
On May 8, Saul flew in by decision of the judges to Bivolu.
Now, Hearn is unsure which of the two fighters Canelo will pick.
“I think everything is heading towards a rematch with Bivol. We will probably announce Canelo’s next move next week. He really has two options,” Hearn said.
BoxingSocial. “He can rematch Bivol, which I know he wants to do, or he can go back to a big trilogy against GGG and then fight Bivol.”
Roy Jones Confident Canelo Needs Third Golovkin Fight
According to the functionary, if Alvarez decides to fight Golovkin, then Bivol will defend the title “around the same time.”
Hearn lamented that it was “incredible” for him to see a pound leader dropped to 6th or 7th in the rankings after failing to go “to a division he doesn’t even belong to” and trying to beat one of the best there.
“But this is boxing … We will make a decision next week with him,” promised the head of Matchroom.
And if Canelo picks Golovkin, then Hearn has named three options for Bivol for the fall. The former leader of the pound believes that Canelo should get a rematch with Bivol, Golovkin is not needed.
