Published on 08 December 2015

The third World MMA Championship took place between 26 and 29 of November in Prague, Czech Republic.
The competition becomes harder with each year. In some cases the disproportion among the team level gets bigger. Suffice it to say that in Russia, for instance, the national champions are identified after a vigorous selection process with around 10.000 amateur athletes participating. The eventual winners get vast experience and improve their skills considerably compared with other countries’s national championship selection processes.

Representing the National Italian MMA Team of FIGHT1, led by DTN Davide Ferretti were the following athletes: Gregorio Davide La Torre (-66 Kg), Simone La Preziosa (-70 Kg), Francesco Controversa (-77 Kg) and Massimiliano Sammarco (-84 Kg).

Also present at the World Congress held along with the World Championship was of Dr. Paul Biotti who represented FIGHT1 organisation.

Starting in 1/16 finals Massimiliano Sammarco steamrolled the first rival in Lithuanian Andrey Grigorjev beating him with a very effective ground and pound. Sammarco passed further to break the arm of Huang Pei Wei from Taiwan but was stopped in the quarterfinals after a very tough match against tough Georgian Giorgi Lobjanidze.

Gregorio Davide La Torre faced Hungarian Adam Szekacs and won with a spectacular knockout. While in the quarterfinals he faced a strong athlete Archil Taziashvili. And again the Georgian fighter prevailed in a fight against Italian by Decision. Taziashvili proceeded to eventualy win the bronze medal in the championship.

Simone La Preziosa, despite a hard back injury few days before departure to Prague, went blow for blow against the Belarusian athlete Mikhail Bondar but eventualy submitted to a triangle choke.

Francesco Controversa passed straight to the second round of elimination when the initial opponent failed to appear. There Francesco faced off againt the eventual silver medalist from Kazakhstan Shavkat Rahmonov, 2014 World MMA Champion, who defeated Italian with a triangle.

Overall, an excellent performance of the Italian National team led by Davide Ferretti and sponsored by Boxeur des Rues, in an every growing level of WMMAA-led competition. Italian athletes always showcase resilience and determination which puts this country on the map in the world of amateur Mixed Martial Arts.
